Purpose of the role:

Location: Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, Benton North Farm, NE12 8EH

We’re looking for a practical, hands-on and organised Facilities & Site Operative to help keep Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter safe, well maintained and running smoothly.

This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same. You’ll be involved in everything from general maintenance and Health & Safety checks to vet runs, collecting donations, charity shop deliveries and supporting our corporate volunteering programme.

Head of Operations

Main Duties:

Maintenance & Health & Safety

· Carry out general repairs, DIY, decorating and preventative maintenance across the Shelter site.

· Complete routine Health & Safety checks, including vehicles, ladders, fire extinguishers and first aid boxes.

· Identify hazards, report issues and support risk assessments and safe working practices.

· Liaise with contractors and support planned and reactive maintenance.

Vet Runs, Collections & Deliveries

· Undertake vet runs using Shelter vehicles, transporting animals safely to and from veterinary appointments.

· Collect and deliver donated food and supplies from supermarkets, businesses and community partners.

· Keep Shelter vehicles clean, tidy and ready for use.

Corporate Volunteering

· Coordinate and run corporate volunteering days.

· Welcome volunteers and provide site inductions and Health & Safety briefings.

· Prepare activities, equipment and work areas and supervise volunteers safely.

· Help ensure corporate volunteers have a positive and rewarding experience.

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

· Full, valid UK driving licence and ability to drive Shelter vehicles.

· Previous experience in general maintenance, repairs, DIY or a similar practical role.

· Good practical problem-solving and communication skills.

· Ability to undertake routine Health & Safety checks.

· Reliable, proactive and organised, with the ability to work independently.

· Comfortable working outdoors and supervising volunteers.

Desirable

· Experience supporting corporate volunteering or community activities.

· Knowledge of Health & Safety, risk assessments or safe systems of work.

· Experience of decorating, plumbing, carpentry, fencing or other building maintenance.

Time Commitment:

Hours: 22.5 hours per week – 3 days per week, 8am–4pm (30-minute unpaid lunch)
Working Days: Thursday & Friday essential, plus Tuesday or Wednesday (day to be agreed)
