About Us

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter was established in 1896 and helps thousands of lost, unwanted, neglected, abused and abandoned animals every year.  Our objective is the promotion of kindness and prevention of cruelty to animals.

We reunite lost animals with their owners and find loving new homes for those no longer wanted. We cover the whole of the North East from our two shelters within Newcastle, Claremont Road and Benton North Farm.

All arriving animals including stray dogs picked up by the dog wardens will be taken to our Claremont Road shelter.  If you have lost your pet, please call our Claremont Road Shelter on 0191 232 2878.

You can reclaim your lost pet Monday – Sunday: 8.45am to 6.45pm

If you are struggling to look after your pet and feel it would be best to find a new home, please contact us and we will do our best to help.  Remember we are here to help the animals not to judge so please call us on 0191 232 2878.

Our experienced staff at Claremont Road will be carrying out behaviour training with the animals before they are rehomed as well as providing veterinary treatment and special care for animals who arrive injured or sick and also to vulnerable and abused animals.

All animals looking for homes will be at our Benton North Farm Shelter.

You can visit our Benton North Farm shelter Monday – Sunday: 1pm until 6.15pm (last entry is 6pm)

Please note we are closed on the last Wednesday of each month, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

If you are thinking of introducing a new addition to your family, please come and visit and talk to our staff about which animal would suit your family and lifestyle.  Adopting an animal is a very rewarding experience and all of our animals are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and come with 4 weeks’ free pet insurance and a free veterinary health check for peace of mind.

Our Benton North Farm shelter is also home to our resident horses, ponies, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goat and ex-battery chickens.

We have a team of dedicated staff who care for the animals on a daily basis and a team of volunteers who assist with dog walking, cat cuddling, fundraising and more.
