Oscar's Journey

When 14-year-old Oscar arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in December 2024, it was clear from the start that he had a heart full of love to give. As soon as he came through our gates, he went straight to staff for cuddles and strokes, happy to sit by their side as though he had known them for his whole life.

Oscar’s teeth were in a poor state when he arrived and they were causing him pain and discomfort while eating. As well as this, he also had a lump that needed to be removed. After a discussion our veterinary partners, we decided he would need dental surgery and the lump taken away.

He was very well behaved at the vets, stayed calm through all of his treatment and recovered quickly! Despite being an old boy, he took everything thrown at him in his stride.

After recovering, Oscar continued to make friends with everyone he met on site! He enjoyed seeing the other dogs and met them with a wagging tail, but what he liked most was sniffing the grass and taking his time to explore!

One team member said, “He was such a gentle, easy-going boy, Everyone loved him.”

A Home for His Twilight Years

In January, after a short time at the Shelter, Oscar found his forever home

After one week of fostering, his new owner said:
“What a lovely, easy-going lad. Nothing seems to phase him. We’re into a routine now so I’m getting to know him more.”

Six months later, she told us:
“He has brought so much happiness into my life, he makes me laugh out loud every single day, what a character he is. The last six months have flown by, I feel so lucky to have him.”

Oscar’s story shows that older dogs can still bring so much love and happiness. It is never too late to find the perfect companion.
