This Christmas, for our 12 Strays of Christmas appeal, we’re sharing the powerful stories of 12 incredible animals who’ve journeys haven’t been easy! Each one has been given a second chance thanks to the kindness and generosity of people like you.

When Iris arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in May 2025, she had been found wandering alone, her tiny body buried beneath thick, painful mats that covered her face, legs, and torso. She struggled to walk, couldn’t see properly, and couldn’t rest. Iris had been suffering for a long time.
We rushed her in for emergency grooming to make her comfortable, and only then discovered she had just one eye, hidden beneath her matted fur. Once she was freed from her coat, Iris began her long road to recovery. She underwent neutering, dental surgery to remove four rotten teeth, and treatment for a severe urine infection and dehydration. Her vet care totalled £492.29, every penny of which was made possible thanks to kind supporters like you.
As the weeks went by, Iris revealed herself to be a gentle and affectionate soul. Though shy at first, she soon grew in confidence, curling into laps for cuddles and forming bonds with other dogs, though she preferred the calmer ones to the big, bouncy types!
In late August, Iris met her future. A loving family welcomed her into their home on a foster trial, and within days, they were smitten. “We can’t imagine life without her,” they told us. By early September, it was official, Iris had found her forever home, where she now enjoys all the love and comfort she deserves.
Stories like Iris’s are only possible because of you. Your donations fund vital treatments, safe shelter, and the chance for animals to begin again. This Christmas, please consider making a donation to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter to help us care for more dogs and cats who need a second chance.
