April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, a time to shine a light on the silent suffering that too many animals still endure. From neglect and abandonment to physical abuse, cruelty takes many forms—some obvious, others hidden. By understanding the signs and knowing how to take action, we can all play a part in protecting the animals who rely on us for care and compassion. Here’s how you can help make a difference.
Identifying cruelty
Cruelty to animals isn’t always obvious. It can range from clear signs like untreated injuries, visible neglect, or violence, to more hidden issues such as animals kept in poor conditions, lacking proper food, shelter or socialisation. Overcrowded homes, chronic isolation, and failure to seek vet care are all forms of cruelty. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth reporting—it could save a life.
Milo as a puppy
Milo’s story
This lovely lad is Milo, a young Cane Corso who came to us in quite a sorry state, having been locked away in a dark cupboard and scared of human touch, he was only 12 weeks old! Milo was also suffering from broken teeth from trying to escape the cupboard and fight for his survival. On arrival at the Shelter Milo was totally withdrawn, cowering and fearful of people, trying to hide in the corner of his kennel, he barely made a sound!
Immediately we assigned a dedicated staff member to his care and set him up in a quiet room, away from the noise and disturbance of the other animals and people. This safe space allowed Milo to begin his healing journey, where, day by day, he learned to feel safe again. Slowly, our team worked to rebuild his trust, patiently helping him find courage in small steps. Over time, he underwent crucial dental surgery to repair the damage from his past.
Through gentle care and patience, Milo began to trust again. Little by little, he started to venture out, meeting other people and even other animals. He learned to walk on a lead, climb stairs, and eventually play with his new friend, Nellie. After 51 days in our care, Milo’s transformation was ready for the next step, life in his forever home, leaving his troubled past behind for a future filled with love and joy.
Now Milo lives in a house where he is showered with all the love and affection he deserves. He lives a life of luxury where he is as happy to go on adventures as he is to snooze on the sofa with his amazing family.
