In the spirit of giving, Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter has donated a substantial amount of pet food to People’s Kitchen and West End Food Bank. This kind gesture aims to alleviate the struggles faced by pet owners this winter, ensuring their beloved animals are well-fed and nourished, and less risk of being rehomed. The donation is particularly focused on unsuitable food for the Shelter, including gravy-based products, which are less suited to nervous dogs but ideal for household pets.

Anjuli Hakin, Animal Welfare Manager at the Shelter adds, “This winter, we’re committed to supporting pet owners in the community. We recognise the importance of every contribution in keeping families and their pets together. Our food donation is our way of helping to lighten the load for those in need, ensuring pets remain a joyful part of their homes and are well fed.”

The choice to donate these specific items aligns with the shelter’s practical and compassionate approach. Gravy-based products, while not fitting for the shelter’s anxious dogs, serve as a tasty and nutritious option for pets in domestic settings. This initiative not only aids the animals but also demonstrates the shelter’s dedication to minimizing waste and bolstering community support.

In addition to this act of kindness, the shelter has launched its Troubled Tail Appeal. This campaign seeks to raise essential funds to support their ongoing efforts in animal care and rehoming, especially crucial during these colder months when resources are stretched.

“The Troubled Tail Appeal is a vital part of our winter efforts. We aim to raise awareness and funds to continue our mission of caring for animals in need,” Anjuli added. “Every year, we face the challenge of raising around £1.2 million to cover our costs. This festive season, we invite the community to contribute to our cause, helping us to ensure that our shelter animals receive the love and care they deserve.”

This collaboration between Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, People’s Kitchen, and West End Food Bank, coupled with the ‘Troubled Tail’ appeal, showcases the remarkable impact of collective efforts in supporting both animals and their owners during difficult times.
