When Big Dan Burn met Little Big Dan Burn!

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter has scored a heart-warming victory after welcoming Newcastle United and England star Dan Burn to meet Big Danielle Burn – one of eleven ‘Carabao Pups’ born at the Shelter in April and named after NUFC’s starting lineup of this year’s Carabao Cup Final.

Dan Burn, who is a firm supporter of the Shelter, took time out to visit the team, learn more about the crucial work undertaken on behalf of dogs and cats in need, and have some special one-on-one time with his Carabao Pup counterpart.

Since the unique pup squad was introduced last month, mum Zara – who came to the shelter as a stray – and her litter of staffie-cross pups, has already attracted considerable attention, but the Shelter is keen to balance excitement with education.

Available for adoption from Monday 16th June 2025, local fans and families alike are encouraged to apply, taking onboard crucial advice from Anjuli Hakin, Head of Animal Welfare at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter:

“We know people will fall in love with Zara’s pups, and applications will open on 16th June. These 11 puppies need 11 committed homes, and we hope not to disappoint those that are unsuccessful. Puppies are wonderful, but they are also a serious, long-term responsibility. We’d love those who aren’t matched with a pup to consider adopting one of the many other animals in our care who are just as deserving of a loving home.”

Zara, who was brought to the Shelter as a stray in late March, has since settled into life at the Shelter and proven herself to be a calm, affectionate mother. Her ‘Carabao Pups’, are thriving under her care and once fully healed and signed off by the vet, Zara will also be looking for her forever home.

Those interested in adopting a member of this pup squad, or one of the Shelter’s many other wonderful four-legged residents, should visit www.dogandcatshelter.com to complete an application form.
