Purpose of the role:

We are seeking a motivated, reliable, and compassionate Animal Care Assistant to join our team. This role is central to maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare within the Shelter. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about animal care, able to work collaboratively, and flexible in responding to the evolving needs of a busy charity environment.

Main Duties:

Animal Welfare & Husbandry
  • Ensure the welfare needs of all animals are consistently met, including feeding, watering, cleaning, exercise, behaviour training and enrichment
  • Confidently clean animal accommodation and handle animals safely and appropriately
  • Monitor animals’ health and behaviour, reporting any concerns to management immediately
Hygiene & Environment
  • Maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness and biosecurity across all animal areas
  • Follow infection control and health and safety procedures at all times
Adoptions & Public Interaction
  • Support meetings with potential adopters and foster carers, introducing animals during socialisations
  • Clearly and confidently explain individual animals’ needs, behaviour, and care requirements
  • Assist visitors with general queries while on site
Volunteer Support
  • Help train, guide, and support volunteers in safe animal handling and welfare practices
Stock & Operations
  • Monitor stock levels of food, PPE, cleaning products, and animal care supplies, reporting shortages promptly
  • Receive, organise, and store deliveries such as food, litter, and cleaning materials (heavy lifting required)
  • Sort and organise donated items into appropriate storage areas
Transport & External Support
  • Transport animals to veterinary appointments in emergencies where required (driving licence preferred)
Team & Organisational Duties
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team, managing time and tasks efficiently
  • Implement new procedures and working practices as directed by management
  • Support the fundraising and marketing team when required, including assisting with animal photography and handling, and assisting with on and off site events
General
  • Undertake any other duties that may arise during employment, as required for the development and success of the Shelter

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential
  • Genuine passion for animal welfare
  • Comfortable handling and working closely with dogs and cats
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding role
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to follow instructions
  • Good observational skills and attention to detail
Desirable
  • Previous experience in animal care or a kennel/cattery environment
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Full UK driving licence

Time Commitment:

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Work Location: In person
Pay: £12.21 per hour
Hours: 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (normally between 8.00am and 6.00pm)
Contract: Includes weekend and bank holiday working
