Eldon Square Announces Dog-Friendly Policy in New Charity Partnership
Eldon Square has officially launched its new dog-friendly policy, marking a significant milestone for animal lovers across Newcastle. The shopping centre will now welcome well-behaved dogs and their owners throughout designated areas, enabling visitors to enjoy shopping and dining experiences without leaving their pets at home.
The announcement was made in collaboration with Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter and Newcastle United Foundation, both of which attended the launch event to celebrate what they described as an important step forward for inclusivity in the city.
As a longstanding local animal welfare charity, Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter said it was pleased to see more public spaces embracing companion animals. Representatives noted that initiatives of this kind not only make Newcastle a more accessible place for pet owners but also help increase awareness of the charity’s work in caring for and rehoming animals across the region.
The Shelter highlighted Eldon Square’s commitment to creating an environment rooted in kindness, community spirit, and animal welfare. The partnership will see further activity in 2025, including opportunities to showcase dogs seeking new homes in the heart of the city.
Chris Bray, Chief Executive of Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, welcomed the collaboration, saying:
“We’re delighted to partner with Eldon Square in such a heartwarming and impactful way. Showcasing our dogs in the heart of the city raises vital awareness about Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter and reminds people every animal deserves a second chance. It is great to see Eldon Square taking steps to make the venue dog friendly. The collaboration helps the shelter reach new audiences and, most importantly, find loving forever homes for dogs in our care.”
Newcastle United Foundation Chief Executive, Steve Beharall, also praised the partnership, noting its wider community impact. He said:
“Newcastle United Foundation is delighted to partner with Eldon Square and the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter. This collaboration is about more than just our shared love for animals; it’s about harnessing the unique appeal of the Newcastle United brand to engage our community in meaningful ways. By combining the excitement of our football club with the unique place dogs have in our lives, we aim to engage even more people to help them understand how they can be more active, to learn new skills, become more employable, and realise their potential. Together, we can reach more people than ever before and make a lasting impact on our community.”
Eldon Square representatives expressed their gratitude to partner organisations and supporters who helped bring the initiative to fruition. The new policy is now in effect, with further collaborative plans expected to be announced in the coming months.
