We are delighted to announce Professor Richard Kirk as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
Richard Brings a wealth of experience from a distinguished career in both medicine and the charity sector. He chaired the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF), leading it to be named the inaugural North East Charity of the Year in 2015, and is currently Chair of the Tyne Rivers Trust, the region’s only environmental charity caring for the Tyne rivers and their tributaries. He also serves as a trustee of the Lily foundation, supporting children and adults with mitochondrial disease.
Professionally, Richard developed an international reputation in the management of children with heart disease, particularly those requiring transplantation. Alongside this, his much-loved dog Oscar travelled the world with his family and became a therapy dog, bringing comfort and joy to children confined to hospital; reflecting Richard’s lifelong commitment to care and compassion.
On joining the Shelter, Richard said:
“It’s an honour to be appointed Chair of the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, established in 1896 and one of the oldest charities in the North East. The Shelter has achieved so much over the years, but the need has never been greater. The cost-of-living crisis has forced many families to abandon their beloved pets, leaving us to provide safety, veterinary care, and love until they can be found forever homes. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly, but our priority must always be giving every dog and cat the chance of happiness in a home of their own.”
Chris Bray, Chief Executive of Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter adds:
“I am delighted that Richard is joining the board, he brings a lot of experience and knowledge as a chairman at a time when the shelter needs to focus on finaincial sustainability and growing income in future years.” Richard has already brought a lot of enthusiasm and support and is a fantastic appointment for the Shelter.
After more than eight years of dedicated service on our Board of Trustees, and an impactful tenure as Chair since 2022, we bid a fond farewell to Andrea, Lady Wylie. Andrea’s unwavering leadership, compassion, and deep commmitment to animal welfare have been instrumental in shaping Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter into the professional, inclusive, and caring charity it is today.
Former Chair, Andrea, Lady Wylie adds:
“I couldn’t be more delighted to hand over the reins to Richard. With his rich experience in the charitable sector, I know the Shelter is in safe hands. It is a privilege to pass this role on with the utmost respect for him, and I wish him every success as he leads the shelter forwards.”
The Shelter, which celebrates its 130th Birthday in 2026 is set to begin a new chapter under Richard’s leadership, confident that his vision, experience, and passion will help the charity to continue its mission to care for animals in need. But we cannot do this alone. Rising costs and the increasing number of abandoned animals mean we rely on the incredible generosity of our supporters. If you are able, please donate, spread the word, or get involved. Together, we can give every dog and cat the loving home they deserve.
