Blowing the whistle on animal cruelty
Back in February 2025, Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter were delighted to invite current Premier League referee, Michael Oliver and Ex-Premier League referee Rebecca Welch, who made history as the first ever woman to referee a Premier League game, to the Shelter to look around the Shelter to see the work that we do to help animals in need and to help raise awareness of the growing crisis of animal cruelty and neglect.
During their visit, they met several animals who’ve faced heartbreaking circumstances like Joyce, who was abandoned, Storm, who was picked up as a stray, and Kiki, who gave birth to puppies on site after being found with suspected burn injuries.
Michael Oliver said: “You don’t realise how many animals have suffered behind closed doors until you see it first-hand. Places like this shelter are vital.”
Rebecca Welch added: “The work being done here is phenomenal. Every animal deserves safety and care, and that’s exactly what they find at this Shelter.”
Michael continued: “We’re proud to help raise awareness. These animals can’t speak up for themselves, so it’s up to us to step in.”
Rebecca said: “There’s no excuse for cruelty. Supporting shelters like this means giving animals a second chance at life.”
One dog in particular who they met had experienced quite a difficult situation in her past. When Kiki arrived at the Shelter, it was clear she hadn’t had an easy start to life. She had a large, painful burn across her back and was understandably wary of people. It wasn’t long before we discovered she was also pregnant. Her wound was badly infected and required urgent treatment, including antibiotics, pain relief, and daily wound care.
Thanks to the incredible dedication of our animal welfare team, Kiki slowly began to heal both physically and emotionally. She started to trust again, and her sweet, affectionate nature began to shine through.
On New Year’s Eve, Kiki gave birth to a healthy litter of seven puppies, each one named after a character from The Lord of the Rings. She was an exceptional mam, caring for and nurturing her pups with patience and devotion.
As spring arrived, her puppies found their forever homes in May and not long after, Kiki did too. Today, she’s living the happy, love-filled life she always deserved.
When asked about Kiki, Rebecca Welch said “You’d never guess what Kiki’s been through just by meeting her, she’s so gentle and affectionate. It’s heartbreaking to hear about her situation but the care that she’s received here at the Shelter has made all the difference and without it, I dread to think what her future might have looked like.”
Michael Oliver added, “Kiki’s calm nature is incredible, especially knowing she gave birth to a litter of puppies while recovering from a serious burn. Her story shows just how vital this Shelter is, they don’t just give animals a safe space, they give them a second chance at life and what they’ve done for Kiki is nothing short of remarkable.”
Your donations are absolutely crucial in ensuring that we can continue to provide care for animals like Joyce, Storm and Kiki, who have all gone on to find their perfect forever homes. Without our work, animals like these would not be able to get the second chance in their life that they deserve.
