Q. Do I have to name an actual charity, or can I just leave the money ‘to help disabled children’ or ‘to help animals’?
A. It’s best to be specific - that’s the only way to be sure your wishes are completely clear. If you would like to confirm any of our charity’s details, please contact Julie Parkin at www.dogandcatshelter.com.
Q. Do I need to tell Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter that I’ve included them in my will?
A. It’s not essential, but we would be delighted if you chose to. Simply phone or write to Julie Parkin. Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Q. What are the tax advantages of leaving money to chartity?
A. If you leave money and possessions worth more than a set value, currently £285,000 your beneficiaries (the people you’re leaving it to) may have to pay 40% Inheritance Tax on the amount over that threshold. £285,000 may seem a great deal of money but, if you include your home, you could find your savings and possessions add up to more than that. However, donations to charity are exempt from tax, so anything you leave to Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter is free of Inheritance Tax and we will receive the full amount. Ask your solicitor about the best ways to use your will to reduce tax.
Q. What will it cost me?
A. When your solicitor is next updating your will simply ask them to include a donation to your favourite cause. It doesn’t need to cost anything extra if you are already revising your will. Apart from that there’s only the price of the phone call to tell us - that’s all it will cost in your lifetime.
Q. Do I have to leave a lot?
A. It’s up to you. We would be grateful for any amount you are able to afford and your donation will make a real difference to Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter’s work.
Q. I want to include Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in my will, what do I do next?
A. Simply tell your solicitor you want to include Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in your will and what you want to leave and they’ll make the necessary changes. Our details are in this leaflet.
On behalf of Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter - Thank you very much.
