Claremont Road was opened in 1919 and looks after thousands of animals every year, time has taken its toll and the buildings were desperately in need of renewal.
The Building Appeal brought in a lot of funds and we are extremely grateful to our supporters for all their help, especially those very special people who remembered us in their wills, without their extremely kind gifts the build would not have been possible.
The building work is now well underway although the horrendous weather we have experienced over the past couple of months is hindering the programme. This phase of the build will see three new kennel blocks, providing 29 kennels, all with their own indoor sleeping area and covered outdoor exercise areas.
We now desperately need to raise funds for Phase 3 of the build which will bring new heated puppy and kitten rooms for our younger ones which will be situated away from the main kennels to alleviate the stress caused by the noise.
There will also be a new cattery where every cat will have a snug sleeping space and access to an exercise area.
A new treatment room will also be built for health checks, vaccinating and scanning.
The new plans will allow wheelchairs and prams easy access and will provide space to walk and sit with the dogs, enabling people to get to know the dog they they would like to adopt.
If you would like to donate to our appeal, please send cheques payable to "Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter" to Benton North Farm, Benton Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE12 8EH.
